Bismarck City Ordinance requires owners of land abutting any sidewalk to keep the sidewalk clean and unobstructed at all times and to remove snow and ice within 24 hours after a snowfall.
On January 24, 2017, the Bismarck Board of City Commissioners approved a request by the City Engineer to continue the temporary suspension of the requirement to remove snow from city sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowfall through the end of the winter season, April 30, 2017.
The City will continue to enforce the ordinance but, due to recent snow events, is granting property owners additional time to come into compliance.
It is the duty of property owners to maintain their sidewalks. Residents are still required to keep their sidewalks cleared of snow and ice after it snows. City staff will use discretion when determining an appropriate time frame for removal after a snowfall.
