Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health Launches HPV Prevention Campaign

Today Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health (BBPH) launched a Human papillomavirus (HPV) prevention and education campaign. The emphasis is upon HPV cancer prevention and increased community awareness of the Human papillomavirus and its detrimental, cancer-causing health effects.

The focus of the campaign is on HPV cancer prevention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there are 30,700 new HPV-related cancers annually. Routine vaccination and completion of the HPV vaccination series can prevent most HPV cancers. According to the ND Cancer Coalition Control Plan, cancer is the second leading cause of death for residents.

BBPH will direct their efforts towards adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 with emphasis on initiation of the vaccine series for 11 year olds. Education is focused on utilizing evidence-based HPV vaccine materials and the prevention of cancers related to HPV before exposure to the virus. Through education and immunization efforts the goal is to increase community awareness and provide education about benefits of HPV vaccination.

The HPV vaccine is recommended for preteen boys and girls at age 11 or 12 so they are protected before ever being exposed to the virus. HPV vaccine also produces a higher immune response in preteens than in older adolescents. If your teen hasn’t gotten the vaccine yet, talk to their doctor about getting it for them as soon as possible.

The launch of a targeted media and social media campaign will provide education and information about the HPV vaccine to youth, adolescents, teens, parents, guardians and families in the Bismarck and Burleigh County area. BBPH will also work with community partners, parents and families to increase knowledge of and access to the HPV vaccine.

HPV vaccine is cancer prevention.  Vaccinate your kids at 11 – 12 years of age.  Ask about it for your child. Call Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health today at 701-355-1540 or visit or on Facebook at
