[ARCHIVED] Sump Pump Discharges Should Not Go to the Sanitary Sewer System

Sump pump discharges should not go to the sanitary sewer system.

Residents of Bismarck are asked not to discharge flows from sump pumps to the sanitary sewer system via floor drains in their homes. Instead these flows should be directed outside where they can flow to the storm drain system. Please be sure the flow is directed to an area that will not erode, such as a driveway or a grassed area.

The recent wet weather has resulted in a large increase in flows in the sanitary sewer system. Excessive sewer flows can lead to sewer back-ups or operational problems at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
