MPO Bike & Ped Subcommittee

OVERVIEW

The MPO Bike & Ped Subcommittee is an advisory subcommittee to the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and the Policy Board of the MPO. It is also a working group dedicated to promoting safe and accessible active transportation options within the MPO area. A Black BicycleActive transportation refers to nonmotorized travel modes including walking, bicycling, and taking transit. Transit is included because most trips begin and end with a walk or bike ride to get to or from the transit trip. The MPO Bike & Ped Subcommittee provides a forum for promoting the active transportation goals of the Arrive 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (PDF) and the MPO Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan (PDF) as well as the MPO's responsibility to undertake and facilitate multimodal planning in the region.

The Subcommittee helps bring active transportation modes into the larger discussion of improving health, safety, mobility, and access for citizens and visitors in the Bismarck-Mandan MPO area. Further, the Subcommittee discusses and reviews plans, products, and projects relevant to active transportation within the MPO area as the opportunity arises. Through its review and ranking process of Transportation Alternatives (TA) project concepts and applications, the Subcommittee plays an integral role in the final prioritization by the TAC and Policy Board of projects to be considered for funding and programming.

SUBCOMMITTEE MEMBERS

Professionals from a variety of disciplines including community planning and engineering, local parks and recreation districts, law enforcement, public health, and NDDOT representatives help comprise the diverse membership of the MPO Bike & Ped Subcommittee. In addition, there are several members from local bicycle and active transportation advocacy groups who provide their technical expertise to promote the activities and objectives of the Subcommittee. No active transportation consortium would be complete without input from those in the community who claim no particular affiliation but have their boots on the ground and are actively engaged in various forms of walking, biking, rolling, or using transit and these members have been invaluable in assisting the Subcommittee with attaining its various goals relating to bicycling, walking, and active transportation.

The Subcommittee is open to those individuals committed to promoting active transportation objectives in the MPO area. There are no application forms or selection criteria to meet, nor is there a selection process. Contact the MPO for further information about how you can get involved.
