[ARCHIVED] Help Bismarck Emergency Services Find your Address

Finding the proper address quickly in an emergency can mean the difference between life and death. Emergency responders such as fire, law enforcement or ambulance can have difficulty finding or identifying specific locations because addresses are poorly marked, hidden by shrubbery or decorations, or difficult to distinguish from the house color.

The Bismarck Fire Department along with law enforcement and emergency medical services are asking residents to take a moment to make sure their business and home address can be easily seen from the street. Below are some import things to remember when looking at your address:

  • The address number should be posted on the street side of the building and should be clearly visible from the street.
  • Mount the address close to exterior lighting to improve visibility at night.
  • Numbers should be a minimum of four (4) inches high and one half (1/2) inches wide.
  • The numbers must be a stark contrast to the color of the building.
  • Numbers should be placed high enough to not be covered by snow or decorative vegetation.
  • Structures further than 100 feet from the road, obstructed from the view from the street by landscaping or located on private driveways with other buildings should post their addresses by the entrance at the street as well on the building to reduce confusion.
  • By ensuring that your address is clearly visible, you can help reduce the time needed to find your business or home in the event of an emergency.
