[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department reminds residents that leaves cannot be disposed of by burning.

Bismarck, ND – The Bismarck Fire Department would like to remind residents that disposing of yard waste by burning is prohibited within City limits.  Per City of Bismarck Code of Ordinance “A person may not burn or cause to be burned any paper, garbage, excelsior, straw, hay, leaves, brush, weeds, dry grass, shavings, rags, barrels, boxes, crates, lumber or other combustible materials or solid waste within the city, except in an incinerator approved by the state health department.”

In recent days the Bismarck Fire Department has received multiple complaints from members of the public for nuisance smoke produced by the burning of yard waste.  When the department receives a complaint for nuisance smoke, a fire crew is dispatched to investigate the source of the smoke.  If a fire crew finds that the smoke is produced by the burning of leaves, grass clippings, brush, or other yard waste, they have the authority to extinguish the fire, and will advise the property owner that the activity is prohibited by ordinance.

The Bismarck Fire Department encourages residents to see the recent Bismarck Public Works public service announcement for a list of ways they can properly dispose of their yard waste; https://www.bismarcknd.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=8177
