Disasters in North Dakota over the past few years (floods, tornadoes, blizzards) have made us realize we need to be doing more to prepare ourselves, and those whose health is most at risk during a disaster. With that in mind, Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health is creating a list of our vulnerable populations. Vulnerable populations are often those who live independently, or with the help of a caregiver, and yet may need additional assistance in the event of a disaster, especially in the area of transportation. Vulnerable populations include, but are not limited to:
• Those with a disability or have significant health issues
• Elderly with no family or friends to assist• Those with social or behavioral challenges
• Homeless
BBPH has created a pre-registration system to help identify where those who are most vulnerable can be found. Registering into this system should not be considered a guarantee that you will be placed on a priority list for emergency responders; however it will make us aware of your individual situation and help us to be better prepared to assist you. Your information will be kept confidential. It will be used only in case of an emergency. Examples of when we might use this list to contact vulnerable populations include: tornadoes, chemical spills, and floods.
