[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department Responds to Explosion in a Commercial Building

At 2:51 PM on Monday, March 25, 2013 there were 911 calls reporting an explosion and blast that “went through the roof”; further information indicated there were no flames. The business, BEP Petroleum & Tank, is located at 1200 Yegan Road.

The first responding officer gave an initial report of a hole in the roof of the structure but no flames. He discovered that workers were welding on a tanker used to transport petroleum products and the fumes inside the tanker ignited. The explosion blew a hole in the roof and blew some of the sheet metal roofing material completely off the roof. Four fire crews responded.

One worker had singed some of the hair on his beard. Two workers reported some hearing loss. There were no other reports of injury.

Preliminary damage estimate is $50,000 to the structure. There was little damage to the contents.
