[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department Responds to Fire in Norma Apartments

There was a 911 call to report a fire at 215 N 3rd St which is known as the Norma Apartments.

First responding firefighters found smoke coming from the southeast corner of the building. The fire started on the second floor, then spread to the third floor and vented through the roof before fire crews arrived on scene. Firefighters evacuated the building and attacked the fire with crews going to both the second and third floor. An aerial ladder was used to send firefighters to the roof. The fire was difficult to extinguish because it was inside the walls, ceilings and attic space. The fire was considered extinguished after about 45 minutes. Five fire crews responded with three additional crews from callback firefighters. Standby crews were also called in to staff stations during the fire. Firefighters remained on scene until 1:30 PM.

No persons were injured in the fire. None of the 18 units will be able to be occupied until the damaged apartments can be isolated and electricity restored to the building.

The Fire Department Chaplain and the Red Cross were working with the occupants to find temporary housing. Preliminary damage estimate $500,000.

After the investigation, the fire was determined to be accidental and started in a second floor apartment.
