[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department responds to fire in 8 unit apartment building

Bismarck Fire Department responds to fire in 8 unit apartment building; one person rescued out a window. At around 5:10 PM on Thursday, July 04, 2013, there was a 911 call of a fire in an eight unit apartment building at 922 N 4th Street in Bismarck, ND.

First responding officer gave an initial report of smoke showing. Initial report was that all occupants were out of the structure. An occupant of the second floor was on the phone with Central Dispatch and informed them that she was still in her apartment and could not get out. Fire crews laddered the structure and rescued the woman out of her window. Another occupant jumped from a second floor apartment and was injured. Both were treated and released from local hospitals. The fire originated on a main floor apartment and was quickly extinguished by fire crews. There was some fire extension into a second main floor apartment that was also quickly extinguished. Occupants of all 8 units were displaced as a result of the fire. One firefighter was assessed on scene by ambulance personnel for heat related issues.

5 fire crews were involved in rescue, extinguishment, overhaul and investigation. Preliminary damage estimates are roughly $100,000.

The Fire Department Chaplain and the Red Cross were asked to respond for family support. Red Cross coordinated temporary housing for all occupants.

Area of origin for the fire was a main floor apartment kitchen area. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
