[ARCHIVED] Diversity University Series to Begin Sept. 12

The Bismarck Human Relations (HRC) and BSC Embracing Diversity Committees will kick-off “Diversity University”, a series of panel discussions beginning Thursday, Sept. 12. The first three presentations will be held at the Bismarck State College Student Union Prairie Room, 1425 Schafer Street.

The location changes for the Oct. 3 program. Diversity-related speakers anchor the “Celebration of Cultures” in the National Energy Center of Excellence Bavendick Stateroom. All presentations begin at 7 p.m., are free of charge and open to the public.

Sept. 12 – “The Challenges of Public Safety on Reservations in North Dakota and the Role of the U.S. Attorney’s Office”A discussion of public safety in the Native American reservation communities in North Dakota. U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon will discuss the scope of the challenge based on his experiences and the path forward under the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Anti-Violence Strategy for Tribal Communities.

Sept. 19 – “Progress for LGBT Americans. What does this mean for North Dakotans?”Great progress continues to be made towards Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) equality in the United States as local governments, state legislatures and the U.S. Supreme Court recognize that discrimination towards LGBT Americans is wrong and harmful to our communities. As progress is made elsewhere, what does that mean for LGBT North Dakotans? Join us for a thought provoking discussion from District 44 House of Representatives member Josh Boschee.

Sept. 26 - “Cultural Diversity in the Workplace”As North Dakota becomes increasingly diverse, what are the key policies needed to assure that we have open and welcoming workplaces? This discussion will focus on building healthy, culturally competent employment opportunities for all. This panel discussion will be facilitated by Rose Stoller of The Consensus Council, Inc. and will feature Michelle Miller a recruiter from KLJ; Adele Page a staff attorney from Legal Services of ND; Karen Siegfried a customer service consultant from Job Service ND; and Mark Del Vecchio Vice-President of Human Resources from MDU.

The Bismarck Human Relations Committee and Bismarck State College Embracing Diversity Committee co-sponsor the Diversity University Series. The mission of the Human Relations Committee is to protect and promote the personal dignity of all Bismarck citizens and to eliminate any discriminatory barriers that prevent them from reaching their full human potential.
