SNAP, formerly known as the food stamp program is the nation’s largest federal nutritional assistance program. It assists single people and families with little or no income to buy food.
In North Dakota, 73% of households receiving SNAP have income below the poverty line (about $31,000 for a family of four in 2014), and 32% of households are in deep poverty, with income below 50% of the poverty line. Many households still struggle to put food on the table. Seventy-six percent of eligible individuals participate in SNAP in North Dakota, meaning that 24% of eligible individuals do not receive benefits.
