Around 5:30 am on Saturday August 22, 2015 the Bismarck Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire on the outside deck and smoke in the house at 1529 N 18th St..
The first arriving officer gave an initial report of fire coming from the deck above the garage. Fire crews pulled hand lines and extinguished the fire on the deck above the garage while other crews made their way into the house to extinguish fire on the upper level of the house. Fire from the deck extended into a bedroom and burned the roof off the house in this area. The police department made initial contact with the renter who told him that there was no one else in the home. Four fire crews responded with 16 firefighters. Crews had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.
There were no injuries to the occupant or firefighters. Preliminary damage estimate is $100,000 to the structure. There was heavy fire damage to two upstairs rooms and heat damage to two other upper rooms with smoke damage throughout the house.
The area of origin for the fire was the exterior deck. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but will likely be classified as accidental with the ignition source being a discarded cigarette. 4 people were displaced as a result of the fire. Red Cross is working with the renters.
