[ARCHIVED] “Traffic Tip Tuesday” Public Awareness Campaign Launch

The City of Bismarck, Police and Engineering Departments, and Public Information Office are launching a Public Awareness Campaign about Rules of the Road at crosswalks and intersections as it relates to both pedestrians and drivers. We plan to cover one topic every Tuesday, and release the information though traditional media, Bismarck’s city website, and social media sites (both City and Police) under the heading “Traffic Tip Tuesday”.

Through this outreach, some of the topics that will be covered are:
• Uncontrolled intersections
• Crosswalks
• Driver responsibilities
• Pedestrian responsibilities
• Cyclists responsibilities
• Defensive driving

In 2014, the Bismarck Police Department took reports of 3,822 traffic crashes. 785 occurred at intersections and 22 involved pedestrians. In 2015 to date, there have been 603 crashes at intersections and 27 involving pedestrians.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among Americans up to 34 years old. Right-of-way rules are a means of establishing orderly traffic movement. If everyone follows these rules, crashes can be reduced.

It is our objective to educate all those using the public roadways, whether in a car or on the street to reduce the number of collisions occurring in Bismarck and create a safer environment for all involved.
