Around 6:41 AM on Tuesday, February 16, the Bismarck Fire Department responded to a report of smoke and possible fire in a storage building in Bismarck. The first arriving crew gave an initial report of smoke showing, established command and went in to search and then extinguish the fire.
Fire crews found the source of the smoke and discovered some fire in the back of a work truck inside of the unit. The crew quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the unit. There was significant fire damage to the box of the pickup. There was light to moderate smoke damage to the interior of the shop condo. There was no extension of smoke or fire to any other units.
Thirteen firefighters responded to the fire. No one was injured. Cause of the fire was accidental and appears to be from a spontaneous combustion of rags that had been used to apply lacquer to wood product.
Approximate estimate of fire and smoke damage is $12,000.
The Bismarck Fire Department would like to remind everyone that after using rags for application of oil based products, rags should be placed in a non-combustible container with a tight fitting lid.
