[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department responds to apartment complex fire

At 11:13 PM on Thursday, March 10, 2016 the Bismarck Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in a 42-unit apartment building at 1834 E Capitol Ave. Dispatch advised responding units that the fire was visible to vehicles passing by on the interstate. It was confirmed the fire was on the third floor.

The first arriving truck reported they could see no fire and would be investigating. Investigation found a fire had originated on the deck of a third floor apartment and had spread to the vinyl siding and burned an area up to the eves of the roof. The tenant of the apartment had noticed the flames and poured water on the fire which extinguished most of the fire.

The fire was accidental in nature and the cause appeared to be an improperly discarded cigarette. Damage is estimated at $10,000.00. There were no injuries and no occupants were displaced.

The fire department responded with four Engines, one Ladder Truck, one Command vehicle and sixteen personnel.

The Bismarck Fire Department would like to remind the public to use care when disposing smoking materials. Dispose of cigarettes by using a metal container, or by placing them in a cup of water.
