An officer involved shooting occurred this evening at 11:42 p.m. at the 600 block of West Arbor Avenue at the Clem Kelly softball complex. A 49 year old Bismarck man was shot by police and taken to a local hospital by Metro Area Ambulance where he is currently being treated. No officers were injured.
On August 8 at 11:16 p.m. dispatch received a 911 call from a person who stated he had two hostages at gunpoint and then disconnected. Dispatch was unable to make contact upon calling the number back. Subsequent calls went straight to voicemail.
Officers responded to the location. When they arrived they made contact with a resident who reported there were no problems there. While checking the area an officer saw someone by the tennis courts, who began yelling at the officer and took off running toward the area of softball diamond one and entered the dugout on the north side. The officer could see he had something in his hand like he was holding a handgun wrapped in a shirt. He wasn’t following officers’ commands and made a movement like he was pointing a weapon at the officer. In defense of that officer, three other officers on the scene fired their weapons at the suspect.
Metro Area Ambulance responded and transported the suspect to a local hospital where he is currently being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.
No officers were injured during this incident. One officer has three years’ experience with BPD, one has 1.5 years’ experience with the BPD and it was the first night on patrol with a Field Training Officer for the third officer who has three years prior law enforcement experience. The officers have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
The case has been turned over to BCI for investigation.
