[ARCHIVED] GO! Bismarck-Mandan Encourages Walking and Biking on Walk to School Day, October 5

Member organizations of the Go! Bismarck-Mandan coalition including the Bismarck Police Department Youth Bureau encourage walking and biking to school on October 5, 2016. This date is recognized internationally as Walk to School Day to encourage active transportation, healthier habits and a cleaner environment.
Walk to School Day is an opportunity to teach safe pedestrian and bicycling skills to children, demonstrate where it is hard or easy to walk and bike, and identify where to make improvements. With improvements made, walking and biking to school are supported and encouraged throughout the school year.

Go! Bismarck-Mandan and the Bismarck Police Department Youth Bureau, encourages parents, schools, and community residents to celebrate the day by assisting students to walk and bike to school on October 5, as well.

Walk to School Day began as a simple idea – children and parents, school and local officials walking to school together on a designated day. The day acts as a reminder of the simple joy of walking to school, the health benefits of regular daily activity, and the need for safe places to walk and bike. Contact your neighborhood school to ask if they are participating in Walk to School Day activities, or create your own celebration.

Go! Bismarck-Mandan, a local healthy community coalition, aims to continuously bring people together to build a culture of health where we live, learn, work, and play. For more information visit www.gobismarckmandan.org and www.walkbiketoschool.org.
