[ARCHIVED] Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health to Offer Free Lactation Clinic

BISMARCK, N.D. – Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health is currently in year two of a five year
grant awarded by the North Dakota Department of Health with the overall objective to raise
breastfeeding rates for infants at six months of age in Bismarck and Burleigh County. Bismarck-
Burleigh Public Health has certified lactation counselors available to assist with communitywide
efforts for increasing breastfeeding rates. New mothers often face obstacles when it comes
to breastfeeding such as: lack of support with breastfeeding, going back to work and perception
of milk supply.

“We are really excited to offer this service to residents of Bismarck and Burleigh county as we
value our role in public health promotion, prevention, and protection,” said Theresa Schmidt,
Nurse Manager. “We will provide education to new mothers on milk supply, latching, and
different approaches to breastfeeding and lactation. We want to provide a calm and relaxed
approach to lactation support and we will work with moms to help them reach their individual
lactation or breastfeeding goals,” said Jessica L., registered nurse, certified lactation counselor,

Certified lactation counselors are available Monday through Friday at Bismarck-Burleigh Public
Health for anyone that has questions related to breastfeeding or lactation. There will be a weekly
clinic on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at no cost. The lactation clinic is open to anyone that is
seeking assistance with breastfeeding or lactation. It is preferred to call ahead and schedule an
appointment, but walk-ins are welcome too.

Anyone seeking information about breastfeeding or lactation is encouraged to call Bismarck-
Burleigh Public Health, 701-355-1540 or stop in at our office, 500 E. Front Avenue, in
