Here's some breastfeeding news that will have you cheering and just in time for Mother’s Day. Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health (BBPH) in collaboration with the Dakota Zoo, have unveiled what has been dubbed the “breastfeeding bench”. Yes, that's right, a bench designed by – and for breastfeeding moms. It would, of course, also be a big help to bottle feeding parents who need to feed their baby while visiting the zoo. “What a wonderful idea and possibly the first we’re aware of in North Dakota,” said Katie Johnke, Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health. The bench consists of a place for moms to sit while breastfeeding or bottle feeding when out and about and includes a baby changing table. There is even a shaded cover so mom and baby are protected from the sun while using it.Katie Johnke, Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health, led the project. "While breastfeeding in public is your right, it’s not always easy or comfortable – so it’s a huge win when places take action to help support nursing moms. We’re hoping that this bench will symbolize the need for accessible breastfeeding facilities in public places and breastfeeding support, regardless of the time and place.”The Dakota Zoo was a prime location for this bench. Last year, they opened up the indoor Nursing Den for moms that were wanting a space, but this bench gives moms the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as well, and in the family oriented environment of the zoo, it’s one less thing for a new mom to worry about. "It makes life a little bit easier for them." Said Terry Lincoln, Dakota Zoo Director.
