Bismarck’s Vector Control Program staff continues to do all they can to help control the mosquito population in Bismarck. We are treating stagnant bodies of water with mosquito larvacide and fogging public areas such as parks and walking paths. Currently there is no budget for a city wide application which can be costly – in 2015 the estimated cost for an aerial city-wide fog was approximately $52,500. Furthermore, a city-wide application would likely provide mosquito relief for no more than 72 hours. Consequently, a city a wide application is not projected at this time.
Actions residents can take to safeguard against mosquitoes:
• Wear light-colored, long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
• Stay indoors during the evening and early morning hours when mosquitoes are most active.
• Use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (PMD) or permethrin. Always follow the directions on the label.
• Install or repair screens on windows and doors.
• Keep the grass and shrubbery cut short.
• Clean roof gutters and downspout screens.
• Remove old tires from your yard and surrounding areas.
• Empty water from buckets, birdbaths, wading pools, troughs and potted-plant drip trays every four to five days.

Larvacide Briquets
Burleigh County is selling larvacide briquets to help residents deal with mosquitoes due to stagnant water on their property. One briquet treats 100 square feet of shallow water, with no current, and lasts up to 150 days - the entire mosquito season. Residents can purchase the briquets for $3 each at the following location:
