The City of Bismarck will begin the cankerworm spray program on Monday, June 1, 2020. Aerial spraying is expected to begin 30 minutes before sunrise, weather permitting. Spraying for cankerworms will occur from the southern city limits to Ave. C, west of Washington Street. The area west of Ward Road, from Ave. C to Edwards Ave. along with Pioneer Park and the river front will be sprayed. Areas to be treated are determined based on adult cankerworm monitoring from this spring and last fall. Monitoring has indicated that treatment will be required due to the high numbers of adult female cankerworms in these areas.
An aerial spraying contractor will spray the areas with an environmentally safe product containing Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki (Btk) that naturally eliminates the cankerworms but is harmless to pets, wildlife and humans. All spraying activities are subject to weather conditions.
Btk is a naturally occurring bacterium that is important in natural control of pest populations and is considered ideal for pest management because of its specificity to certain pests and is safe to people, pets, fish, birds, mammals and other insects
