At approximately 10:07 PM on Tuesday, June 9th, the Central Dakota Communications Center received a report of a fire in an automotive repair shop at Dvorak Motors, located on Airport Road in Bismarck. The Bismarck Fire Department was dispatched, along with the Bismarck Police Department and Metro Ambulance. A passerby had reported fire coming from the shop door. The first arriving fire crew reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the shop. The business was closed, and there were no occupants on the premises at the time of the fire.
The first-in crew deployed lines to initiate an attack on the fire, which was confined to a small area of the shop. Crews had the fire extinguished approximately eight minutes after arrival. Other arriving crews checked for extension of the fire into the office area of the business, and found no fire extension beyond the shop. Crews remained on scene for some time to complete ventilation operations due to smoke spread into other areas of the building.
Six fire department apparatus and 18 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Bismarck Police Department assisted with scene control. Metro Area Ambulance was on scene to provide medical support. MDU was called to the scene to secure utilities.
An investigation was conducted and it was determined that the cause of the fire was likely related to an electric go cart that had been plugged in to charge overnight, in the shop area. The business is expected to be able to resume normal operations soon, after some minor repairs, clean up, and odor removal.
