[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Department responds to smoking related fire in trailer home

At approximately 6:17 AM on Monday, August 17, the Central Dakota Communications Center received a report of fire on the back deck of a trailer home at the 2500 block of Centennial Road. The Bismarck Fire Department was dispatched to investigate. 

The first arriving fire crew reported heavy smoke and flames showing from the outside. The fire crew established command and contacted the occupants of the home, who reported that everyone was out. The fire crew pulled hose lines to begin extinguishing the fire. As other fire crews arrived they pulled additional hose lines to attack the fire, established a water supply, and shut off utilities. Once the fire was extinguished, an overhaul operation was conducted to find any remaining hot spots. When overhaul was complete, control of the building was returned to home owners.

Six fire department apparatus and 16 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The Bismarck Police Department assisted with scene control. Metro Area Ambulance was on stand-by for medical support. MDU and Capital Electric were called to the scene to secure the utilities.

The trailer home was occupied at the time of the fire. There were no injuries to the occupants of the home. There were no injuries to first responders. There was extensive fire and smoke damage to the exterior and interior of the home. A fire investigation was conducted and determined that the area of origin was a potted plant located on the back deck, that was filled with potting mix. The cause of the fire was smoking material (cigarette butt) that was discarded into the potting mix. The cause of this fire has been classified as accidental.
