[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Fire Marshal's Fire Safety Tips During Dry and Windy Conditions

BISMARCK, ND – The arrival of warm temperatures, low humidity, high winds, and disappearing snow cover, have created conditions where the risk of wildfire in the Bismarck area has increased. Special attention should given to the following activities:

Those working outdoors should be aware of fire hazards posed by exhaust systems, catalytic converters, and safety chains when operating in off-road areas.

  • Smoking materials should be disposed of properly in an approved non-combustible receptacle.
  • Never flick a cigarette butt onto the ground, out the window of a vehicle, or into vegetation.
  • Make sure that cigarette butts are put out all the way, every time.

When using solid-fuel fired grills, fire pits, portable fire places and chimineas, the following precautions should be taken:

  • Be aware of wind and weather conditions before you burn. Limit burning to early morning or evening when winds typically decrease and humidity increases.
  • Monitor the activity closely and never leave a fire unattended.
  • Keep water, an extinguisher, or basic hand tools close for a quick response.
  • Use a spark arrestor screen to control sparks and embers, when provided with the unit.
  • Make sure that the fire is out before you leave.
  • Never discard hot ashes into a combustible container. Place ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid.  Wet thoroughly with water so the ashes are completely cooled.
