To improve safety for children and adults crossing the roadway in high traffic areas, the city of Bismarck has begun installing curb extensions or “bump outs”, improving safety for students and their families when crossing the street.
The curb extensions extend the sidewalk or curb line into the parking lane, reducing the effective street width while maintaining an adequate driving lane. This reduces the crossing distance, and the time that pedestrians are in the street.
