[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Winter Storm Preparedness Information and Safety Tips

BISMARCK, N.D. – Due to the extent of snowfall and wind forecast with the upcoming winter storm system, it’s important to evaluate any travel plans you may have, and consider cancelling your travel plans if not essential. Be sure to check road conditions including road closures before traveling. If you do travel, and happen to get stuck, remember to keep your vehicle’s tailpipe clear of snow to avoid potential for carbon monoxide poisoning.

The snow will likely be heavy and wet – so be sure to take breaks to avoid injury. Be aware that heavy snow can slow the response time for Fire, Ambulance and Emergency Response in some cases. Bismarck snow plow operators will focus on clearing (and re-clearing) Snow Emergency Routes first, and will clear residential streets after the storm has passed and priority streets are cleared.

According to the National Weather Service, snow and strong winds will be the main hazards with blizzard conditions and a chance of 16-27 inches of snow possible in the Bismarck area. Be prepared for the potential of power outages which may last for several hours. Trees and overhead utility lines may be damaged as a result of heavy snow and wind. If you have an alternate heating source to be used in times of power failure or furnace failure, be sure the alternate heating source is designed and intended for indoor use to avoid risk of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Also, it’s always a good idea to have a minimum of a 3-day supply of food, water, and other essentials to ensure preparedness for predicted events as well as incidents that can occur with limited or no warning. When establishing emergency supplies, critical items may include prescriptions and necessary medical supplies as well as unique items for infants or others with special needs. “Consider taking these steps to stay safe before, during and after a winter storm. Be ready to protect your family from the dangers of winter weather by planning ahead,” said Gary Stockert, Bismarck Emergency Manager.
