[ARCHIVED] City of Bismarck Using Porous Pavement in Tree Wells As Part of Downtown Improvement Project

Porous Pavement Used In Tree WellsThe City of Bismarck will be changing how they approach tree maintenance downtown, moving away from metal tree grates and instead using recycled rubber.

As part of a downtown improvement project, porous pavement will be used around the tree wells. This porous pavement allows for water to filtrate through the surface, keeps the site free of unwanted grass and weeds, and is ADA compliant.

“Traditional steel tree grates have proven to be very difficult to maintain and enlarge as trees grow beyond the size of the initial opening,” said Bismarck City Forester Doug Wiles. “In order to modify the metal tree grates, it would take two or three employees to lift the grates, and then a grinder or saw would be needed to cut away the metal.”

The porous pavement is significantly easier to modify. It can be altered using a blade to cut away unwanted material and allow the tree more room to grow.

“This product is an attractive, low-maintenance solution for our green spaces in the downtown area of Bismarck,” said Wiles.

Presently there are tree wells installed on Sixth Street, and all of the trees within this summer’s downtown improvement project will receive the new pads. Other areas in Bismarck may be considered for the porous pavement if there are existing cutouts in the sidewalk.
