[ARCHIVED] Bismarck Mayor Encourages Community 3rd, 7th Graders to Compete in “If I Were Mayor” Contest

If I Were Mayor logo with NDLCBismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz is encouraging area youth in third and seventh grade to compete in the North Dakota League of Cities annual “If I Were Mayor” contest.

Students have until March 15 to submit their essays. Essay contest winners will be announced in conjunction with City Government Week, April 3-7, and will receive a $150 cash prize and have their essays featured in the League’s publication CITYScan.

“This contest is an amazing way to encourage our next generation of citizens to think about their own priorities and how those priorities would guide their leadership,” said Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz. “The premise of the contest is a simple question, but when you start to explore what those priorities could mean for a community, that is where the contest really offers an interesting way to highlight public service. My belief is that being a mayor is having that vision for where you would like to take a community and then going through and determining how to give that vision life. This is a tremendous exercise for our students. Best of luck to all participants in the contest.”

Each spring, the North Dakota League of Cities sponsors the statewide contest for third- and seventh-grade students The contest encourages young people to think about public service and future community leadership. Essays must address why the student feels their community is great and what they would do to improve their city if they were mayor.
