Bismarck-Mandan Regional ITS Architecture

Overview

The Bismarck-Mandan Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture is prepared under the leadership of the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Planning Organization. ITS, very simply, is computer technology applied to the transportation system to make it a more efficient, safer system for the users. The goal of the Bismarck-Mandan regional architecture (RA) is to guide the implementation of ITS within the Bismarck-Mandan region, as well as to coordinate the funding, deployment, information sharing, and operations of ITS systems. The Bismarck-Mandan RA is comprised of the following five major components:

  • Traffic and travel management
  • Maintenance and construction management
  • Emergency management
  • Advanced data management
  • Transit management

As part of the RA development, the Bismarck-Mandan MPO has been designated with the role of maintaining and updating the Bis-Man Regional ITS Architecture as needed. The RA is a living document requiring regular maintenance to reflect the most up-to-date ITS picture in the region. An update cycle of every 3-5 years as been identified for this effort.

The Policy Board of the Bismarck-Mandan MPO approved the most recent update to the ITS Architecture on December 16, 2025.

Transportation System Management & Operations (TSMO) strategies require a clear plan for practical application of intelligent transportation systems. An ITS Plan is a coordinated overarching plan for identifying the community needs and the potential solutions ITS can provide. Such a plan assists and guides communities in future deployment of ITS projects in the area. The current Bismarck-Mandan ITS Plan was adopted in April, 2004.
